Meet our speakers and facilitators



Dr Doug Barclay

Doug Barclay is an SMO at Middlemore Hospital with a special interest in minimal access surgery and education.

He completed training in Bristol and Plymouth, England, where he  also completed a postgraduate teaching qualification.  Doug is passionate about education.  He has been leading PROMPT Obstetric Emergency Simulations at Middlemore for 15 years.  He runs national Laparoscopic Simulation courses for all NZ gynaecology trainees, in addition to sitting on the RANZCOG Simulation Training Advisory Group (STAG). He is a RANZCOG Practice Visitor and has recently led courses on Critical Event Debriefing and Communication Skills.

Douglas is a keen road cyclist and mountain biker. He has given up all hope of cycling fast enough to keep up with his young adult offspring, and is now just grateful when they offer to accompany him.



Dr Katy Culliney

Katy is an Obstetrician Gynaecologist and Clinical Lead at Tauranga Hospital. She completed her training in New Zealand. Katy has an interest in education and simulation, having completed post-graduate study and a simulation Fellowship in Brisbane. 

Her clinical interests are in minimally invasive surgery, persistent pelvic pain and outpatient hysteroscopy. 

She is a member of the RANZCOG simulation, training, and advisory group (STAG) and the RANZCOG/AGES Endoscopic Surgery Advisory Committee (ESAC).



Dr Pelle Kempe

Dr Pelle Kempe, MD, PhD, FRANZCOG, originally from Sweden, where he trained to become an Obstetrician Gynaecologist, Pelle moved to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2017 and works as a generalist Obstetrician Gynaecologist and Medical Lead for Women’s Health at Te Whatu Ora - MidCentral, Palmerston North Hospital. 

Pelle is currently a RANZCOG Councillor and Chair of the RANZCOG Aotearoa New Zealand Committee. He has a strong interest in leadership and quality improvement based on continuous audit and prospective outcome measurement and he has led labour and birth quality improvement projects in both in New Zealand and overseas.



Dr Alicia Mulligan
Course Facilitator

Hi everyone, I am Alicia and currently a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist working at Christchurch Women's Hospital. I did all of my RANZCOG training in the South Island and then went to Melbourne for a fellowship year in 2023 where I worked at the Royal Women's Hospital. I have been back in Christchurch working as a Consultant since April 2024. 

My work interests include Preterm birth, high risk obstetrics and fertility medicine. I also work at Fertility Associates.  I have been part of the RANZCOG family for most of my training. I was the South Island trainee rep for many years and also the Deputy Chair of the Trainees committee. I am currently the Early Career Fellow on the RANZCOG Aotearoa NZ Committee.

The New and Emerging Fellows day is an exciting and interactive day for early career fellows and final year trainees. It is a chance to come together, learn, inspire and talk about topics that will aid maintaining and thriving in the profession. 



Sean O'Sullivan
Wotton Kearney, MPS

Sean is an experienced and trusted advisor who clients turn to when they are faced with medical/legal issues, disciplinary processes, employment disputes and commercial disputes. Sean’s Healthcare Practice requires him to represent the interests of Healthcare providers before a range of disciplinary tribunals and courts including The Medical Council, Coroners Court, and the High Court.

Sean understands the strategic issues critical to the efficient and appropriate resolution of any disciplinary process. He provides a wealth of technical knowledge and negotiation experience to assist clients to get the right results in resolving their disputes.

Sean also advises clients on collective bargaining and employment law matters and is mentioned and is listed as a leading lawyer in Arbitration and Mediation in The Best Lawyers 2021 and 2022 and in the Labour and Employment section in The Asia-Pacific Legal 500 2018. He is as at home delivering training on occupational health and safety procedures and as he is representing clients in judicial and investigative proceedings. He also has a wide range of experience in the resolution of commercial disputes, particularly in property litigation.

Sean leads our relationship with the Medical Protection Society and is also actively involved in pro bono initiatives.
